Dice-Driven Mystery Awaits in Netherveil City
Metaphor Games and Shoreline Games have officially pulled the curtain back on their debut title, Celestial Return, which launches today on PC via Steam. Blending sharp narrative RPG mechanics with a unique, dice-based combat system, this neon-drenched adventure tasks players with navigating the dangerous streets of Netherveil City.

Stepping into the shoes of the disgraced Detective Howard, you are accompanied by a loudmouthed, sentient rose while attempting to untangle a web of deep-seated corruption. In this world, dice aren’t just for mechanics; they represent your bullets, your bribes, and your very last breath. Survival is far from guaranteed, and death is an inevitability you will have to manage strategically.
A Narrative Shaped by Your Choices
The core of Celestial Return lies in its consequences. As you delve into its branching narrative, your internal dialogue—driven by traits like Intelligence, Virtue, and Foolishness—will dictate which paths remain open to you. Focusing too heavily on one vice at the expense of others may lock you out of key story moments, forcing players to carefully balance their personality stats.
Each roll of the dice offers a chance at salvation or a shortcut to more suffering.
Key features include:
- Doomed Gameplay Loop: Earn and spend dice while leveling your personality to gain the edge in conversational combat.
- Strategic Currency: Dice function as your oxygen; hoarding them can lead to missed opportunities, while reckless spending burns your resources too quickly.
- Branching Narrative: A vast, sci-fi story full of mind-bending twists shaped entirely by player decision-making.
- Stunning Visuals: A hand-drawn aesthetic that bridges the gap between the precision of manga and the raw, gritty energy of American comics.
Looking Ahead
While Celestial Return is available now for PC, the developers have confirmed that they are already working on expanding the reach of the game. Console versions for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo are currently in development with a planned release window of Q1 2027. You can check out the official launch trailer here.
